SET’s Capital Market Research Institute Announces Two Award Winners For Outstanding Capital Market Researches

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET)’s Capital Market Research Institute (CMRI), with an aim to enhance  quality researches and researchers for the Thai capital market, has recently presented the 2019 awards to Tanawat Chiewhawan from Chulalongkorn University for his “Stock Market Prediction Using Deep Learning  Based Model with Event Embedding and Technical Indicators” research, and Natdanai Aleenjitphong from Thammasat University for “The Effect of Venture Capital Network and Institutions on Portfolio Companies' Performance in Southeast Asia” research.

SET Senior Executive Vice President Soraphol Tulayasathien said that SET has consistently supported research studies and granted scholarships to university students for more than a decade. Reflecting from 34 submissions from various universities and faculties for the 2019 competition, the project has provided opportunities for students to conduct research studies on the capital market, while exchanging ideas and gaining knowledge from experts. In addition, the increasing number of entrants has reflected interests from students in numerous fields of studies with wider perspectives to make the capital market research more practical and advanced. 

The two award winners are 1.) Tanawat Chiewhawan, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University (having Assistant Professor Peerapon Vateekul, Ph.D. as advisor) won the award for his research entitled “Stock Market Prediction Using Deep Learning Based Model with Event Embedding and Technical Indicators”, which utilized technique in the Machine learning domain including  Artificial Neural Network and Deep Learning to analyze economic news headlines and market data together in a single model to predict SET index. 2.) Natdanai Aleenjitphong, Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Thammasat University (having Professor Arnat Leemakdej, Ph.D. as advisor) received the award for his research entitled “The Effect of Venture Capital Network and Institutions on Portfolio Companies' Performance in Southeast Asia”. The research studied the impact and the interaction of venture capital network and institutional development on a performance of portfolio companies in Southeast Asian emerging economy. The result shows that high level of VC networking helps compensate a lack of fully-developed institution by offering a superior performance of VC backed companies. In addition, three more awards were also presented to the winners, consisting of one fineness award and two awards of honor.

“The winning researches are unique and creative in utilizing new research tools, leading to innovative analyses or fresh perspectives. Notably, they are practical research papers and can bring it up to be the investment strategies,” added Soraphol.

CMRI’s post-graduate research scholarship project, launched in 2010, is one of the knowledge-sharing platforms where the academic front meets businesses in the Thai capital market as it has been widely collaborated well with educational institutions, lecturers and experts in the Thai capital market, government and private sectors, as research grant committee.

This project create research network between the academics and the practitioners in the Thai capital market which enhancing the quality of capital market research studies and can bring it up to practical framework.
