Against Backdrop Of Global Inflation Concerns, FTSE Mondo Visione Index Up 2.5% In May - Up 24.% Over 12 Months

Despite concerns about global inflation, the FTSE Mondo Visione Index put in a strong performance gaining 2.5% in May, with the index closing the month at 76,327.72 points, up from the April close of 74,469.49.

HKEX ended May as the world's largest exchange operator by market capitalisation.

The top 5 exchanges by market capitalisation at the end of May were:

Exchange Market Cap (USD bn)
Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing 79.36
CME Group 77.51
Intercontinental Exchange 62.40
London Stock Exchange Group 38.91
Deutsche Boerse 29.99

The best performer by capital returns in US dollars was India's BSE with a 63.4 per cent increase in share price from 30 April 2021 to 31 May 2021. The next best performer was the Philippine Stock Exchange with a 10.5 per cent increase, followed by Warsaw Stock Exchange with an 8.9 per cent increase over the same period.

The worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was Deutsche Boerse with an 5.2 per cent decrease in share price from 30 April 2021 to 31 May 2021. This was followed by Intercontinental Exchange with a 4.1 per cent decline and Bursa Malaysia with an 3.7 per cent decrease over the same period.

Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index said:

"When Euronext acquired Borsa Italiana at the end of April, it also acquired MTS and CC&G a multi-asset clearing house. The acquisition of CC&G provides Euronext with its own clearing house, and with it, the capability to internalise all of its clearing. MTS the second largest bond trading platform in Europe has the potential to grow. As trading in equities continues to migrate from London to Amsterdam, Euronext's Italian play will likely see more servers being moved to Amsterdam with traders moving to Italy for access to European markets and enjoyment of la dolce vita."
