Brutal October Sees FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Up 1%, B3 Leads The Pack With Cboe Global Markets Close Behind In Halloween Rally
While the exchanges sector remained largely muted in October, US exchanges pushed their way into the top half of the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index despite the Securities and Exchange Commission's decision in October to block exchanges from raising fees on some data products. The SEC decision is being opposed by exchanges.
The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of exchanges performance closed at 50,024.31 on 31 October 2018.
The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars was Brazil’s B3 SA with a 21.9 per cent increase in share price from 30 September to 31 October 2018. The next best performer was Cboe Global Markets with a 17.6 per cent increase, followed by CME Group with a 7.7 per cent increase over the same period.
The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was Bolsa Mexicana de Valores SAB de CV with a 26.1 per cent decrease in share price from 30 September to 31 October 2018. This was followed by the Warsaw Stock Exchange with a 16.3 per cent decline and India’s BSE with a 13.9 per cent decrease over the same period.
Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and also Co-founder of the Index said:
“The debate between US exchanges, the investment banks and regulators over market data fees has only just begun. A window tax was introduced in England, Ireland and Wales in 1696 and in Scotland in 1748. It was actually a tax on houses, scaled according to the number of windows in the house. While taxation has moved on since the 18th century, market data pricing – by vendors and exchanges - seems to be stuck there.”
